Pump-to-Stokes relative intensity noise transfer and analytical modeling of mid-infrared silicon Raman lasers.
An analytical model for mid-infrared (mid-IR) silicon Raman lasers (SRLs) is developed. The relative intensity noise (RIN) transfer from the pump to the Stokes in the lasers is also investigated. The analytical model can be used as a versatile and efficient tool for analysis, design and optimization of mid-IR SRLs. It is shown that conversion efficiency of 70% is attainable and the low-frequenc...
متن کاملNonlinear absorption in silicon and the prospects of mid-infrared silicon Raman lasers
1 Introduction By circumventing the problem of indirect bandgap, Raman scattering offers a path to optical amplification and lasing in silicon [1]. To create the recently demonstrated silicon Raman lasers [2, 3] nonlinear losses due to absorption by free carriers that are generated by two-photon absorption (TPA) had to be eliminated using pulsed pumping or reverse-biased carrier sweep-out. Even...

Silicon Photonics is emerging as an attractive technology in order to realize low cost, high density integrated optical circuits. Realizing active functionalities in Silicon waveguiding structures is being pursued rigorously. In particular, the Stimulated Raman scattering process has attracted considerably attention for achieving on-chip light generation, amplification and wavelength conversion...
متن کاملDemonstration of a Mid-infrared silicon Raman amplifier.
We demonstrate, for the first time, a mid infrared silicon Raman amplifier. Amplification of 12 dB is reported for a signal at 3.39 micron wavelength. The active medium was a 2.5 cm long silicon sample that was pumped with 5ns pulses at 2.88 micron. Such a technology can potentially extend silicon photonics' application beyond data communication in the near IR and into the mid-IR world of remot...
متن کاملInvestigation of SOI Raman Lasers for Mid-Infrared Gas Sensing
In this paper, the investigation and detailed modeling of a cascaded Raman laser, operating in the midwave infrared region, is described. The device is based on silicon-on-insulator optical waveguides and a coupled resonant microcavity. Theoretical results are compared with recent experiments, demonstrating a very good agreement. Design criteria are derived for cascaded Raman lasers working as ...
